There are three layers that work together to make a smart city: a physical layer of infrastructure, a digital layer of technology, and a data layer that connects both. This can be seen in shopping centers, parks, and stadiums, where cameras, floors, waste management, and escalators can all be managed with IoT devices and a central management room.
Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems are also used in sectors such as transportation, energy, manufacturing, and healthcare to improve services, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life.
However, there are concerns about data privacy and social exclusion in smart cities. There is a risk that urban areas with poor web connectivity could be left out of the smart-cities trend. But technologies and platforms are being developed and improved to address these concerns, such as blockchain platforms that provide more secure environments and improved network gateways that work with low voltage to address network connectivity issues.
Another technological platform used in smart cities is the digital twin. This is a digital representation of a physical product, system, or process that serves as a digital counterpart of it for practical purposes. It can be used to simulate, integrate, test, monitor, and maintain physical infrastructure. Digital Twin uses gaming platforms like Unreal Engine or Unity to create an exact replica of the physical infrastructure and connect data from IoT devices to management centers.
